HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. --The Hendricks County Humane Society is doing their part in the month of October for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month by making sure dogs and cats who do have a home, stay with their home.

The weekends of October 21-22 and October 28-29, the HCHS will offer microchip clinics for a discounted price to help keep your dog out of the shelter if it becomes lost.

"So if your pet is lost and has a microchip, there are scanners - pet stores have scanners, vet offices have scanners, shelters have scanners,” explains Merrily Nilles, the Humane Educator of HCHS.  “So if your animal is brought in, then he can easily be reunited with you because of that microchip."

It costs $10 per pet, when microchipping usually costs between $25 to $50. The process only takes a few minutes at the humane society and the microchip inserted in your pet’s skin is the size of a grain of rice.

Nilles says she has seen cases where microchips are also extrememly helpful when a pet is stolen to reunite them with their families. Microchips also make a huge dent in the stray population.   Many don’t think to microchip their cat, but Nilles says all cat owners should do so because the shelters receive so many cats.

Each day, the microchip clinics run from noon to 4 p.m. at HCHS located at 3033 East Main in Danville.
