CONNERSVILLE, Ind. - A teacher and basketball coach is facing charges after investigators say he had a sexual relationship with a student.
James D. Spivey, 29, of Brookville was arrested Tuesday on felony child seduction charges.
Spivey was a math teacher and the assistant girls' basketball coach at Connersville High School, but police said he resigned his position after the investigation began Feb. 6.
Superintendent Dr. Russell Hodges said the school is taking the allegations against Spivey seriously.
"We do all we can on the preventive side to keep things like this from happening," Hodges said. "When they do happen, we do take any accusation very seriously and move as quickly as we can to bring resolution to the situation."
Police said Spivey had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student who also played on the basketball team.
"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," said parent Laura Wood. "These kids are supposed to be able to look up to their teachers and they shouldn't be taken advantage of like that."
Investigators said Spivey and the student started their relationship shortly after the basketball season began, and the relationship led to sexual encounters at Spivey's home.
Police gave the findings of the investigation to the Franklin County prosecutor, and charges were filed against Spivey.
Spivey has bonded out of the Franklin County Jail.
