INDIANAPOLIS - A man died after an apparent shooting early Sunday, police said.

Just before 12:30 a.m., IU West Hospital officials called Indianapolis Metro Police Department officers about a man in the emergency room suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Hoang Bui, 29, of Avon, was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later, officials said.

Police spoke with witnesses who said a group was playing basketball at the courts on Girls School Road near Avon.

Two men approached and an argument started. Soon after, shots rang through the neighborhood, investigators said.

Trevaughn McCollum lives across the street near the basketball courts.

"I got a call last night from my mom at like around 1 a.m. or so. She was asking if I was safe. She said she heard gun shots and was scared," McCollum said.

Homicide detectives said Bui was shot and witnesses pulled him into a car and drove off, taking him to the hospital.
