Hoosiers not ready for season's end during late summer heat

INDIANAPOLIS - With Labor Day comes the unofficial end of summer – and a brand-new event at Broad Ripple Park. WARMfest rocks on through 10 p.m. Monday as a goodbye to summer, giving families the chance to soak up every last minute of the season.
"Just trying to have a lot of fun today,” grill master Michael Moore said. “It's Labor Day. We've been working a lot and just out here to have some fun."
For Moore, nothing says Labor Day like a hot grill.
For others, it's their final trip to a cool pool that signals summer's last “splash.”
The crowds have been smaller this summer at the outdoor pool and splash park at Fishers YMCA. But as the mercury rose the last couple weeks, so has attendance.
"We have been very active,” Fishers YMCA Aquatics Director Kyle Kamman said. “A lot more than what we have had the rest of the summer. So it was a good end to let people come out and enjoy it."
But, Kamman said, just because the end of summer got hotter, that doesn’t mean pool schedules will shift to match the late heat.
"We have been getting those requests: ‘Can we stay open an extra week?’” Kamman said. “But unfortunately, with programs starting, that's just not something we can do."
Nevertheless, some say they just aren’t ready for summer’s end.
"I am sad it's over. And I actually used the pools more this past couple weeks with the warm weather. My older kids (are) back in school I've got one pre-schooler, so we've been here quite a bit enjoying it,” Mother Garland Wilson said.
Wilson feels a little short-changed by Mother Nature this summer. She and her daughter Mia don't want to see the pools close for the season Monday night.
"I'm sad about it," Mia said.
Others have enjoyed the cooler-than-normal temperatures, like Maury Lathrop and the North East Side Pickle Ball players. They'll soon have to move to an *indoor court to keep the ball rolling.
"Summer this year has been super," Lathrop said. "It's gone by quite quickly, honestly."
And – after today – kids will have to move to indoor pools.
But summer’s not over yet. Several bands will be playing until 10 p.m. Monday at WARMfest.
