Hoosiers who took home Academy Awards through the years

The 89th Academy Awards are filled with celebrities who can’t wait to get their hands on the famous golden statuette, but Hoosiers have also gotten a chance to claim their own over the years.

Several people from Indiana have taken home an Oscar or have been nominated for the honor. Following is a list of Indiana natives who won and were nominated for an Oscar:

OSCAR WINNERS FROM INDIANA

James Baskett, Indianapolis, 1948

The first African-American male to receive an Oscar. He was given an Honorary or Special Oscar for “his able and heart-warming characterization of Uncle Remus, friend and storyteller to the children of the world." This was for his role in Disney’s “Song of the South” from 1947.

He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Sid Grauman, Indianapolis, 1949

Honorary Oscar for being a “master showman,” who raised the standard of exhibition of motion pictures.

Oscars ceremonies were held at his Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in 1944, 1945 and 1946.

Anne Baxter, Michigan City, 1947

Won Best Supporting Actress for “The Razor’s Edge” and is the granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Write.

Baxter was also nominated in 1951 for Best Actress: “All About Eve”

Hoagy Carmichael, Bloomington, 1952

Best Music, Song, “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” shared with Johnny Mercer

George W. Davis, Kokomo, 1954

Best Art Decoration-Set Decoration, Color for “The Robe”

Howard Hawks, Goshen, 1975

Honorary Oscar for being a “Master American Filmmaker”

John Korty, Lafayette, 1978

Best Documentary Feature: “Who Are the DeBolts? And Where Did They Get 19 Kids”

Sydney Pollack, Lafayette, 1986

Best Director, “Out of Africa” (also won Best Picture)

George Seaton, South Bend, 1948, 1955

Best Writing, Screenplay, “Miracle on 34th Street”, 1948

Won Jean Hershott Humanitarian Award, 1962

Nominated two other times in 1944 and 1970

This was the first posthumous acting nomination in Academy Awards history

This was his second consecutive posthumous nomination

Best Costume Design for “Avalon”, 1991

Was also costume designer for such films as “The Natural,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Ghosts of the Mississippi,” “The American President,” “A Few Good Men.”
