INDIANAPOLIS -- Fireworks may be fun for us, but dogs and cats are very sensitive to loud noises.

Many dogs will try to escape the noise by running away from home and end up at a local animal shelter.

If you decide to take your dog around festivities that include fireworks, make sure that dog has a collar with appropriate ID and keep them on a leash at all times.

Indianapolis Animal Care and Control also recommends asking someone to stay with your pet if you need to leave them alone at night.

Thundershirts, chew toys and background noise can help keep your pets calm.

If your dog or cat is extremely anxious, your veterinarian may prescribe medication.

Here are some other tips from IACC to put your pet at ease:

  • Try to keep your pet's routine as normal as possible
  • Make sure your pet has a comfortable, secure space and is not left outside for extended periods
  • If you have an outdoor cat, try to bring it indoors during the evening
  • Take your dog for a long walk in the early evening to help burn off energy and sleep better
