KOKOMO, Ind. – Hundreds of fish found dead in a Kokomo creek over the weekend has caused concern for neighbors in the area.

Melissa Garren said she was surprised when she first saw the dead fish in Wildcat Creek.

“There was so many. It was everywhere all up and down here dead in the water,” said Garren. “Oh my god it was hundreds probably.”

The rainy weekend caused a sewage overflow, and some leaked into the creek. On Friday, a water main, owned by Indiana American water, burst and a spokesperson said some of the water – which contained chlorine – also spilled into the creek.

Officials with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management said the sewage overflow could be a cause for the dead fish, but also plans to investigate the water main break.

Neighbors and their pets have been told to stay out of the creek until further notice.
