INDIANAPOLIS – Hundreds showed their support for "A Day Without Immigrants" by joining in a march across the city of Indianapolis. Several businesses were also closed in support of the event.
Demonstrators marched from Garfield Park to the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday.
In Indianapolis those participating marched peacefully along the sidewalks, holding up their signs of support for immigrants.
Similar demonstrations were held across the country as immigrants stayed home from work and school to demonstrate how important they are to America's economy and its way of life.
The boycott was aimed at President Donald Trump's efforts to crack down on immigration.
"Today we're just here as people, just simply people coming out in the community. Just basically a response to what's going on nationwide in regards to the raids going on around the country and the deportations and also standing in solidarity with all of the communities being attacked by the current agenda,” said Jesus Ramirez, march participant.
Organizers of the Indianapolis march said they believed it was a peaceful way to get their message out.
Hundreds of Indianapolis Public School students were also absent on Thursday in support of the boycott. The school system said that students would receive no extra punishment outside of their normal absence policies.
