INDIANAPOLIS -

Sixteen dogs were killed in a house fire early Wednesday on the city's near northwest side, Indianapolis Fire Department officials said.

Crews were called to the 1200 block of West 35 th Street about 1 a.m. on reports of a structure fire.

Investigators said four people were able to escape the flames after being alerted by smoke detectors, but three dogs and 13 puppies were overcome with smoke and died. One dog was revived with an oxygen mask, firefighters said.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, officials said.

Investigators said the fire likely sparked in the laundry room of the home after a woman put some clothes in the dryer before going to bed.
