IFD: Divers find body in retention pond on city's SW side

Crews were searching pond for missing 21-year-old

INDIANAPOLIS - Authorities found a body in a retention pond on the city’s southwest side late Friday evening.

Divers were searching the retention pond near the Murphy’s Landing Apartments, near Bluff and Southport roads, around 8 p.m.

Officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department said divers were called to the area to search for a missing 21-year-old man. Xavier Perez had been missing for a week and his jacket was found by the pond, authorities said.

Perez's family said he left a bar last Friday and has not been seen since. The bar, Bailey's at Bluff, is located near the area of Murphy's Landing.

Just before 10 p.m., officials confirmed they found a victim in the pond, but the victim’s identity was not yet known.

IFD Capt. Rita Reith said it was not known if the victim was Perez or even if the victim was a male or female.

Divers searched the pond for 48 minutes before finding the victim in six to seven feet of water, about 30 feet from the shore, IFD said.

More details will be released pending the results of an autopsy.
