CROWN POINT, Ind. - An Ill. man was seriously injured after falling asleep and rolling his car in Lake County.
Chester Tanaka, 54, of Morton Grove, Ill., was driving northbound on I-65 near the Lowell exit just after 3 p.m. Sunday when he fell asleep, according to a police report.
Tanaka's 2006 Honda then began drifting off the road to the right. Tanaka overcorrected to the left and then back to the right, causing his car to rollover twice. It came to rest in a corn field approximately 50 feet east of I-65.
Tanaka was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was taken to Saint Anthony's Hospital in Crown Point with non-life threatening injuries, though in serious condition.
Tanaka's wife Cynthia, 51, and their son Kevin, 14, were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. They were both taken to Saint Anthony's for treatment and released.
All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Police said the Honda was a total loss.
