INDIANAPOLIS - A 3-year-old girl accidentally shot herself after police said she found a gun tucked under cushions of a couch at her family's east-Indianapolis apartment.
The girl was rushed to Riley Hospital for Children but detectives said her wounds did not appear to be serious.
Witnesses said police swarmed in before 6 p.m. Tuesday at a nearby Dollar General where the dad called for help.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sgt. Kendale Adams said the father drove to that spot because the gunfire destroyed his cellphone, his only way to call for help at the apartments on Woodsmall Lane, near Interstate 70 and East 21st St.
Adams said no foul play was suspected as the youngster told police she was feeling around under couch cushions when she found the gun.
Witnesses near the Dollar General said the girl walked on her own from the family's car to the ambulance.
Adams said the child was being taken into surgery with a wound to the hand and wrist.
No charges were expected, but police said they would turn their investigation over to prosecutors for a final ruling.
Adams said the girl's father was the only adult present, but he was in another room when the shooting happened.
