An alleged burglary attempt was stopped Monday when an elderly man shot an armed intruder, police said.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on the 700 block of North Bosart Avenue, near the intersection of Emerson Avenue and 10th Street.

Police said preliminary investigation revealed an armed suspect had attempted to illegally enter a home occupied by an elderly couple.

The suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Anthony Talley, allegedly pointed a gun at the head of an elderly female resident in the home during the robbery attempt.

The woman's husband then appeared from the back of the house and fired his weapon, striking Talley multiple times and critically injuring him.

Talley was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was still reported in critical condition Monday night.

Police said Talley is wanted on several outstanding warrants in both Marion and Johnson counties.

Marion County Jail records show Talley has been arrested multiple times on charges of theft, burglary and criminal mischief.
