INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis mother was accused in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.
Brittney Massey, 23, faced charges of murder, battery resulting in death and neglect of a dependent resulting in death. Massey was taken into custody last Friday at the Marion County Jail.
Prosecutors said the incident happened after the daughter had a toilet-training accident.
"As the mother stated and as we have filed, she has admitted to striking the child numerous times with a thin belt and cord," Deputy Prosecutor Denise Robinson said.
Prosecutors said Massey held her daughter face down on her bed until the girl stopped crying.
Her husband came home from work three hours later. He said he found the girl groaning in pain, her body was limp and her eyes were barely open.
Officials said Massey didn’t take her daughter to the hospital until the next morning, and by then it was too late.
Massey has two other young children who are now in the care of Child Protective Services.
Massey has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 11 with a jury trial date set for February.
Prosecutors said her husband will not be charged because he is not the child’s biological father or legal guardian.
