INDIANAPOLIS - A woman was arrested after police said she left her two children alone in an unlocked, running car while she went into a bar to get a beer Sunday evening.
Police were called to John Wayne’s Pub & Eatery in the 2300 block of East Stop 11 Road after a concerned person called for a welfare check on two children left alone in a car.
When police arrived, they found a 1-year-old and 9-year-old alone in the back seat of an unlocked Volkswagen Beetle.
Police made contact with their mother, Denise Shannon, in the parking lot of the bar. Police said she was holding a red solo cup containing beer.
An officer at the scene said the children were OK, but the door on the driver's side was unlocked and the key was in the ignition with the engine running.
Police that spoke with Shannon at the scene said they could detect a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and body.
Shannon told police that she had been drinking earlier at Chuck E. Cheese's before she went to John Wayne’s to get a beer, police said.
She said she did not think it was unsafe to leave her children alone in an unlocked car with the engine running, police said.
Police said Shannon had a blood-alcohol content of 0.13 percent.
Police arrested Shannon on charges of public intoxication and child neglect, for knowingly and intentionally leaving a 1-year-old and 9-year-old inside an unlocked car with the engine running.
A representative with the Department of Child Services was called to the scene.
