INDIANAPOLIS -- An off-duty officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was placed on administrative leave following a "verbal altercation with others" in downtown Indianapolis last Friday.

IMPD Detective Aaron Hamer says the officer got into an argument and fell and hit his head. Hamer says alcohol is suspected in the incident.

The officer banged his hand on a sheriff's deputy's squad car when they detained him, according to Hamer.

EMS was called to the scene because the officer was bleeding from his head.

The IMPD Special Investigations Unit will look into any possible criminal violations, and there will be an Internal Affairs investigation regarding any departmental violations.

Chief Brian Roach placed the officer on administrative leave once he was medically cleared and pending the outcome of both investigations.

This is the second incident involving an off-duty IMPD officer in less than one week.

Last Wednesday, IMPD Lt. Steve King, 50, was taken into custody after he was found unconscious in the driver's seat of his truck, which was stopped diagonally across both lanes of the road in the 8000 block of Gwin Way with its engine running.

King's blood-alcoholcontent was more than four times the legal limit, according to charges filed Friday
