INDIANAPOLIS - A 5-month-old puppy that was nearly stabbed to death has been adopted by an Indianapolis police officer.

Miracle, a pit bull mix, has fully recovered from his stab wounds, and his new owners say he now sleeps in their bed and loves to play with toys and other dogs.

The dog has come a long way since he was found clinging to life after being stabbed a half-dozen times.

Over the summer, officials reported that Miracle was taken to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control, where he underwent life-saving surgery.

More than $1,200 had been raised through community donations to cover all of the medical expenses, according to The Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care and Control blog.

John Madden, 22, was charged with animal cruelty.  He is scheduled to appear in court next month.

When officers questioned Madden, he admitted to stabbing the puppy, saying he wanted to put the animal out of its misery, police said.

The officer and his wife did not want to be identified out of fear of retaliation from the attacker.
