INDIANAPOLIS -- One person is dead after they allegedly hit an IMPD officer's car three times and then crashed after leaving the scene on the south side of Indianapolis Tuesday night.

Shortly before 8 p.m., an on-duty detective was stopped at the intersection of Stop 11 Road and South Emerson Avenue waiting for the stop light to change, according to a press release from IMPD. A vehicle hit the back of the detective's vehicle. The same vehicle hit the back of the detectives vehicle a second time.

The detective got out of his vehicle and identified himself, showed his badge, and had his lights on.

The suspect ignored the detective, according to IMPD, and drove his car toward the detective. The detective stepped behind his vehicle's driver's side door for cover.

The suspect continued toward the detective and hit his drivers side door. The suspect drove south on Emerson Avenue and then west on Stop 11  Road.

The detective later found the suspect's car off to the side of the road. The driver was trapped and pronounced dead on the scene. The driver was identified Wednesday by the Marion County Coroner as 31-year-old Salvador Lecona. The coroner said the cause of Lecona's death was multiple blunt force traumatic injuries, the manner of which was ruled an accident.

The coroner was having difficulty locating family, but was able later to contact someone related to Lecona.

The detective was not injured in the incident.
