INDIANAPOLIS - It was a shocking discovery: An eastside woman found her neighbor on Friday lying in a pool of blood.
Now, police have confirmed the victim was 21-year-old Shannon Kleeman; found dead in her home on the 600 block of North Linwood Avenue on Friday.
Treva Bryant says the young woman who lived across the street with her mother was extremely nice.
"She was just beginning her life," Bryant said. "She loved to walk. She loved to be outside. She was just a wonderful girl."
Bryant said she and her husband heard some loud bangs Friday morning around 9:30 or 10 a.m. She assumes they were gunshots.
Shortly thereafter, Bryant heard screaming and went outside to see what was happening.
It was the victim's sister who was screaming. She asked Bryant to go inside and check on her neighbor.
"I found her in the basement and she … it was bad, it was bad," Bryant said. "They mutilated this child. What I saw I will never forget, and it will take me months or years for me to get that image out of my mind."
Bryant said she hopes police can find the person responsible for taking Kleeman's life.
"She was a wonderful person. She was a lovely girl full of life and no one had the right to take that away, especially the way they did," Bryant said.
Art Barnard, who also lives in the neighborhood, says the murder has him baffled.
"[She was] Always courteous and good natured," Barnard said. The reality of people … What do you do? Watch your back non-stop?"
Police said they are treating the case as a homicide investigation, and the crime lab crew was called to the scene.
Officials said Kleeman appears to have suffered a fatal gunshot wound, but the official cause of death will be determined by the coroner's office.
