LAPORTE, Ind. - Authorities say a northern Indiana high school player has died after collapsing during practice.
LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan said Jake West, 17, suffered apparent cardiac arrest Wednesday evening at LaPorte High School's football field.
Sullivan said bystanders and coaches performed CPR on West and emergency workers shocked him with a defibrillator before taking him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, WNDU reported.
West was a junior and played linebacker for the 1,900-student school about 25 miles west of South Bend.
Friends and family were still in shock Thursday morning after learning about the death of West.
One of his teammates and best friends said he had a personality that could never be forgotten, ABC57 reported.
"He's never down about anything," said Will Smith. "You can talk about anything he always tried his hardest at anything he does. He's just a good a kid."
Moments after hearing about his passing, his peers took to Twitter to share memories of West's life and to try console one another about the loss.
"I haven't thought about that I would just like to talk to him and one more time," Smith said.
