INDINAPOLIS - The Indiana Department of Transportation is warning drivers to look out for potholes as temperatures warm up and the snow begins to melt.

INDOT officials said potholes are formed on streets and interstates when water seeps into pavement cracks, freezes, then expands to push the layers apart.

Heavily traveled roadways can loosen the weakened areas, potentially putting drivers at risk.

INDOT crews said they are actively working to temporarily patch the holes until a more permanent mixture can be put down in the spring.
