Facebook photos showing a diver attempting to check a fisherman’s license stirred up angry comments on the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Facebook page Wednesday.

To add a bit of humor to their lives, officers said they staged an interaction between a fisherman and a DNR diver. Their problem – not everyone was amused by the photos.

“We like to use the element of surprise when on patrol, especially when checking fishing licenses. This might be taking it a bit to far! #indianaico” is what was posted on the Indiana DNR Law District 6 Facebook page Wednesday.

While some people enjoyed the photos, others shared their obvious dislike:

On Thursday, officers gave an explanation for the photos and said they thought the “humor was appropriate.”

“We posted a photograph of our diver interacting with a fisherman yesterday and created a humorous caption. Some people have taken the post out of context to show their displeasure. The man knew we were diving around the docks and he enjoyed his time interacting with the officer. Our divers continuously train to be ready to answer the call when tragedy strikes or when evidence needs to be recovered. With all the seriousness in our officers’ lives, we felt that a little humor was appropriate. Thank you for enjoying our interactions with our citizens as much as we do and for your understanding.”

Some of those angry comments then turned into praises.
