INDIANAPOLIS -- The City of Indianapolis has filed a lawsuit to try to put the brakes on the City of Carmel's construction of several new roundabouts along 96th Street.

The roundabouts are to be built at intersections with Hazel Dell Parkway, Gray Road, Delegates Row and Randall Drive.

Indianapolis contends in the lawsuit that the construction will shrink the city and remove land from Marion County tax rolls.

The suit also states that there was also no traffic study completed.

The Director of Community Relations and Economic Development for the City of Carmel, Nancy Heck, said in a statement that the lawsuit seems to be driven by the City-County Council.

"We have previously, as a courtesy, entered into interlocal agreements for major improvements on 96th Street. However, when the Councilwoman from this district in Marion County refused to discuss it with us, or bring it to the City-County Council, the City of Carmel had not choice but to proceed," said Heck.

The statement also says that Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett have a good relationship and are working toward a solution.

Indianapolis is asking a judge for an injunction to stop the construction without securing an interlocal agreement and to stop the Carmel from acquiring any property.
