INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis beat out Atlanta on Tuesday to host the 2016 Olympic diving trials.
The two cities became finalists when four other host sites were eliminated from the competition. USA Diving, which is based in Indy, said staff and board members would then visit both sites a second time before making a final decision.
The announcement was not expected until Dec. 10.
But after visiting Atlanta and Indy again, the committee came to a quicker decision.
Indy has hosted the trials five times since 1984. Atlanta wanted to host the event at the natatorium on the Georgia Tech campus that was used for diving during the 1996 Olympics.
Purdue alum and Olympic gold medalist David Boudia was scheduled to attend the announcement in downtown Indy on Tuesday.
