INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis officials installed ramps at the downtown canal after a complaint of ducklings dying because they couldn't get out of the water.

The city installed four duck ramps made out of wood planks and insulation, allowing for ducks to get out of the canal. The ramps are near Vermont Street.

Somebody living along the canal contacted RTV6 last year, saying ducklings died because they were too small to get out on their own. The cement edges lining the canal are higher than the water line.

PETA, the animal rights group, also got involved in the effort to get the city to install the ramps.

PETA released the following statement on the new ramps:

“PETA thanks the city of Indianapolis for doing the right thing in striving to coexist with local wildlife. These ramps are a responsible and practical way for the city to make a world of difference for each duckling who will be able to escape drowning in the canal.”
