Indianapolis mother arrested on neglect charge after 4-year-old boy found wandering, police say

Police: Mom said she left sleeping son alone

INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis mother has been arrested after her 4-year-old son was found wandering alone in the cold on the city's southwest side, police said.

Two women told police they were standing outside their apartment in the 4600 block of West Troy Avenue just after 9 p.m. Tuesday when the boy came walking through the complex.

The boy had no shoes, no coat and had urinated on himself, they said.

The women took the wet and trembling boy into their apartment and tried to determine where he lived, and he eventually led them to a home in the 4600 block of West Perry Street.

The women called police when there was no answer at the door.

As police waited at the home, the boy's mother, Roial J. Harris, returned, telling police she had left her sleeping son to do laundry at a nearby Laundromat.

Harris was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent.

Her son was placed with his grandparents.
