INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Museum of Art has been reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and will continue to be considered one of the most prestigious museums in the country.

Of the 35,000 museums in the United States, about 1,000 are accredited.

In order for a museum to be accredited, it must undergo a self-study, then a site visit by peer reviewers.

Representatives from The Frick Collection in New York and the Minneapolis Institute of Art visited the museum to review it.

The reviewers praised the decision for the museum to begin charging for admission in 2015, after years of allowing people to visit for free.

The site report reads, in part:

"We applaud the museum for the strategic and thoughtful move of reducing its reliance on its endowment draw, bringing it into better alignment with industry-wide standards. … The IMA is a remarkable institution. The museum, historic houses and structures, formal gardens and extensive nature park provide a breadth of offerings and experiences for visitors that is quite unique among encyclopedic fine arts museums."
