INDIANAPOLIS - A shooting outside Lafayette Square Mall on Indianapolis' west side left one person dead Wednesday.
The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. in the mall's parking lot.
Police said the victim, Robert Mitcham, 21, of Indianapolis, and his cousin had a meeting set up at the mall with somebody.
That person got into the backseat of the SUV -- driven by the victim's cousin -- and opened fire after a brief conversation, police said.
Mitcham, who was in the front seat of the SUV, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooter fled the vehicle, and the victim's cousin began driving, ending up in a nearby parking lot outside D.J. Beauty Supply at 4235 Lafayette Road, police said.
"One of the theories right now is that (the victim) got a ride from his cousin to meet someone else," said IMPD spokesman Mike Hewitt. "The circumstances of that meeting right now are unknown, so that's one of the things the homicide detectives are currently working on."
The security cameras at the mall were not working at the time of the shooting.
No arrests were made. Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS or text "INDYCS" and tip information to 274627.
