INDIANAPOLIS - Police shot and killed a burglar found hiding in a family's basement on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday night.

Officers were called to a home in the 3800 block of North Arlington Avenue just after 7 p.m.

Family members said they came home to find someone had broken into their home, so they called police and waited for officers to arrive.

When police searched the home, they said they found the burglar hiding in the basement.

Officers struggled with the suspect, and shots were fired, hitting the man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

The officers involved in the shooting, Officer Christopher Wilburn and Officer Erik Keyes, who have been with the department since 2006 and 2010, respectively, were not injured.

They have been placed on paid administrative leave, as in protocol with officer-involved shootings.
