INDIANAPOLIS – A 3-year-old with Type 1 diabetes gained a new furry friend, and his mother has a new way to monitor his blood sugar levels thanks to community support.

Melissa Sherman knew her son Morrison needed a service dog as part of treatment, but she couldn’t pay the $15,000 price tag.

With the help of neighbors and crowdfunding, Maddox joined a new family and alerts Sherman when Morrison’s blood sugar levels are too low or too high.

"There's days where we do the exact same thing, same activities almost and completely different blood sugar numbers and Maddox has a heck of a lot of work to do,” said Sherman.

When blood sugar needs attention, Maddox alerts Sherman by pawing.

“The amount of gratitude that we've had for the entire thing. I don't think I can't even express in words how it feels,” said Sherman.
