Indianapolis -- It’s the end of an era in downtown Indianapolis as the former Marsh store officially became Needler’s Fresh Market on Friday.

The rebranding party at the store on New Jersey Street included a live band, discounts and giveaways.

It was a big day for the neighborhood, who thought they were losing their beloved grocery store for good.

“I don’t drive,” said Lynn Powers. “It was going to be really hard if I didn’t have a grocery store in my backyard anymore.”

And for the workers who thought they’d be out of a job.

“Oh, it was very stressful,” said Mary Greene who has worked at that location since it was O’Malia’s and is now a Needler’s clerk. “Very stressful.”

Thanks to the new owners, neither of those will be the case.

The Needlers stepped in and bought the Marsh store along with 10 others in Indiana after the company filed bankruptcy earlier this year.

The Ohio based Needler's owns 25 other supermarkets in Ohio, Indiana nad Kentucky that are managed by Fresh Encounter Inc.

“You certainly wonder if the competitive environment is such that a small, independent grocery, like us, can compete,” said Michael Needler. “We think that we do the right things for our employees. We think we do the right things for our communities.”
