Here's why Indianapolis interstates are so dark

INDIANAPOLIS -- A retired lighting engineer for the state of Indiana said he's concerned about the number of non-working lights on Indianapolis interstates.

Tom Rouch saw many of the interstate lights go up originally.

"I think we have a safety issue here that needs to be looked at," Rouch said. "We put those lights there for a reason."

RTV6 took a drive around town. Some areas had just a few lights out, but some areas were more impacted, like on I-70 near Harding Street.

Along I-465 near Washington Street, both sides were dark.

So why don't the lights work? INDOT says it can be for a variety of issues, but often it's because they don't know about an issue.

"Often times things can go unfixed because no one brings it to our attention," said Nathan Riggs, of INDOT.

Riggs said fixing the light can be as simple as changing a bulb, or as complicated as rewiring the fixture.

But two of the areas known for being the most dangerous, the North and South splits, are completely dark.

"The North Split area, for instance, there are some outdated wiring systems for that entire network," Riggs said. "We're not going to invest many resources in fixing that problem when INDOT intends on rebuilding the entire interchange."

Riggs said there is no plan on fixing the lights in the meantime.
