INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Animal Care Services is warning those trying to drop off their pets that any animals taken in are at an “increased risk of euthanasia” right now because the shelter is overcapacity – and they’re begging for more adopters.

Even with the “Feline Frenzy” this month, which waives the adoption fees for all cats and kittens, the shelter continues to take in more animals than it can hold.

As a result, shelter staff has had to convert part of their dogs’ quarters to make room for more cats – which means less room for dogs.

“Staff and volunteers continue to care for animals of all kinds and make those animals adoptable for citizens and families of the Indianapolis community. Unfortunately, sometimes more animals come through our doors than space allows, and we sometimes have to do what is best which means making the hard decision to put animals down when there are no other alternatives,” states IACS deputy director Katie Trennepohl. “We want to ensure that all of our furry friends have the opportunity to find loving and happy homes with responsible pet owners. We have adoption counselors on site to help pair families with the right animals. We hope people consider adopting because we know our animals can make an impact in their lives as much as people can in theirs.”

To improve the chances of your animal being adopted the shelter says animals should not be surrendered until after October 3.

If thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, there is no better time to adopt than now. The “Feline Frenzy” adoption special runs through October 1.
