INDIANAPOLIS -- Thousands of people are expected to descend on downtown Indianapolis this weekend for several large events including the unveiling of the Peyton Manning statue and multiple Garth Brooks concerts – which means Indianapolis police will be out in force to make sure everyone stays safe in the wake of the deadly Las Vegas shooting last weekend.

IMPD says a plan for this weekend has been in place for months, but after the mass shootings in Las Vegas they went to the drawing board and put a whole new plan in place.

"it's obviously something that we have to now prepare so we now have the right resources and tools so we don't have something like that,’ said Major Rick Riddle with IMPD’s operations division.

On top of five Garth Brooks concerts at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and a weekend full of Peyton Manning celebrations, Vice President Pence is attending Sunday's Colts game and thousands of people will be in town for at least two different conventions, including the InterPride Conference.

Riddle said that because of Vegas, they will be keeping a closer eye on parking structures and buildings that have a direct line of sight with areas that will be packed with people.

“I think the biggest thing you’ll see is a very overt police presence downtown,” said Riddle. “We want to make sure that everything going on is covered.”

IMPD also met with those who run the hotels and buildings downtown and have discussed with them what potential signs of a threat would be.

They also have SWAT teams ready to go if something were to happen – both in places you can see, and some you can’t.

IMPD says that while they have a large presence downtown there are currently no known threats to Indianapolis or any of the events happening downtown.
