INDIANAPOLIS – Drivers sitting in rush hour traffic who spot the “bike guy” on Indy’s southeast side can’t help but smile.
Near the intersection of Thompson Road and Emerson Avenue, Lionel Hills, a claims processor by day for Anthem, is found riding his bike backward and juggling to entertain his crowd.
He has tons of fans who honk their horns and wave at him daily. He even has his own Facebook fan page.
"I don’t know what kind of day they are having,” said Hills. “When they see me on my bike, it brightens their day.”
Hills purchased his first bike in 2005 at a pawn shop for $19 and shortly after started riding on the handlebars and then backward.
His act began at 71st Street and Michigan Road, then traveled to 38th Street and Georgetown Road and his latest stop on the southeast side.
He works early and gets off just before rush hour. He heads home from work for about 15 minutes, loads up his bike, grabs his iPhone loaded with gospel music and heads to his spot.
Hills is married with kids and grandkids, so he knows the importance of a smile.
