INDIANAPOLIS -- Facing a city-wide addiction crisis, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett has hired a law firm to sue opioid manufacturers and distributors, he said Thursday morning.
The lawsuit will come from the firm of Cohen & Malad, LLP.
“Left unchecked, opioid addiction will continue to incite criminality, tear apart families, and take the lives of Indianapolis residents," Hogsett said in a release. "As we work to combat this epidemic of addiction and connect affected community members with the treatment they need, those who have contributed to this crisis should be held accountable.”
In 2016, Marion County had the highest number of drug overdose deaths in its history, with 345. That is more than four times the number of traffic-related deaths in the county.
Marion County has also led the state -- which has led the country -- in pharmacy robberies.
Hogsett didn't say exactly which companies would be sued.
