INDIANAPOLIS – As winter approaches, road crews have started prepping highways for harsh weather conditions that create potholes.

Workers with the Indiana Department of Transportation began preparing roads months in advance.

“Water when it freezes, expands. When it thaws, it contracts. and that push and pull cycle, pushes on the soil, pushes on the pavement. Creates voids - at some point, will often form a hole,” said Nathan Riggs of INDOT East Central District.

He said INDOT has been trying to preserve the pavement as much as possible by sealing it from moisture.
