INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man who has painted messages on a small wall on the city’s north side since the 1980s has a new one.
Clayton Hamilton recently painted the sign to say “Patriotism – holding your government accountable.”
Hamilton said he painted it as a broad response to the narrative surrounding the NFL kneeling protests.
The original intention was to protest systemic injustices, but it’s being changed to say that the people who kneel don’t support the country, the flag, or the American troops.
“That was never the case,” Hamilton said. “They just changed the dialogue. I’m just putting patriotism up in a way I feel it should be dealt with.”
He painted the word “government” in red, white and blue to make sure people know the government is meant to represent the people, not the other way around.
“Someone said that you should respect the flag,” Hamilton said. “I just wonder if the flag really respects all of its population.”
