INDIANAPOLIS -- Thousands of drivers with unpaid RiverLink tolls have a little more time to pay those fees before their registration are frozen, but probably not much.

The states had planned to start freezing registrations for drivers with unpaid tolls starting at the end of October, but because of the massive response to the news, RiverLink hasn't yet pulled the trigger.

Mindy Peterson with RiverLink Communications said their call volumes skyrocketed last month and they've received 'thousands of calls" every day since from customers who were concerned about their vehicle registrations being frozen over a few dollar toll fee.

Because of that response, Peterson said they want to take a little extra time to address customer concerns and answer those calls, which is why they haven't started the registration freezes YET.

“We are simply reacting to what we saw from our customers, which was a tremendous outreach from people who paid their tolls and were concerned about their registrations,” said Mindy Peterson with RiverLink Communications.

Peterson said the extension is not a "delay" and that customers should expect those freezes to begin in the "very near future" but she could not say exactly when they would start.

She says those who will be affected have already received their final notifications and their registrations are already subject to being frozen - so they will want to pay them as soon as possible.

"When they receive the notification they will want to pay the tolls," said Peterson.

The states plan to roll out the registration holds in waves - not all at once - so if you haven't paid yet, you'll want to do so soon.

According to RiverLink, the company in charge of the tolling, the hold will be placed after a toll is unpaid and at least four notices have been sent to the customer. The notices are mailed over a 135-day period.
