LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Ind. -- There’s nothing better than a home-cooked meal, especially when it’s made by mom or grandma.

It tastes even better when it was made with a purpose, which is what happens every third Wednesday of the month at the Benjamin Court Apartments.

A group of women at Benjamin Court have made it their mission to make a difference for the last ten years.

“Right now we have 14 women. It’s kind of like a sisterhood. Everyone has a job,” said resident Sue Haskett.

They call themselves the “Helping Hands.”

“I love being able to serve other people,” explained Judy Wolven.

So once a month they plan, prep, cook, and cater.

“That’s the thing, we’re still alive and you know, as long as we can move and do, it gives our mind activities and that way we’re not starting to deteriorate!” said Sandra Steiner.

But there’s a greater motivation behind these meals.

“Our meals are four dollars and usually they’re an entrée, a vegetable, or a dessert or a salad, and it’s a good meal,” said Steiner.

This year, that money will go a long way. The “Helping Hands” have raised $2,000.

“There is need, and we’re just a little bit. But we’re helping!” said Haskett.

The donations will go to the Lawrence Township Fire Department and Lambswear, Inc. Both organizations then purchase items for children in need.

“A lot of us don’t really have the fund to do it ourselves, so this helps us feel like we really have done something, and a lump sum makes it feel even better!” explained Steiner.

Soul food, in more ways than one.

“We feel satisfied afterwards knowing what we’ve done and we’re doing something no one else is doing!”
