SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- Amidst claims of nepotism, Southport police chief Thomas Vaughn told the city council that he had no say in the hiring of his son, Kyle.
Kyle Vaughn was hired to replace Southport Lt. Aaron Allan, who was killed in the line of duty in July.
Kyle was on the original hiring list -- the same one from which Allan was hired. A city committee hired Kyle. Chief Vaughn does not sit on that committee.
But still, critics are citing the state's anti-nepotism law, saying the father-son situation is a violation.
Chief Vaughn said he is not his son's direct supervisor. Instead, his son reports to the mayor and an assistant chief. The city's board of works and safety determine's Kyle's salary.
The nepotism criticism is circulating as Vaughn is running for Marion County Sheriff.
