INDIANAPOLIS – As temperatures continue to cool across central Indiana, United Way organizations have begun helping families in need of heating assistance.
People living in Marion and Hendricks counties who need help paying their heat bill can get assistance through December 31 at places like the John Boner Community Center. The program provides a one-time benefit paid directly to the utility provider.
Tina White, who works at the center said for some families, it comes down to deciding between heating their homes or feeding their children.
“So if they make the decision to feed their kids, they can come down here and we'll pay their bills,” said White. “We'll help them with their bills.”
Brigitte Todd said the service has helped her fill in the gap when she falls short.
“My children have asthma, one daughter in particular is very severe. So, I have to have the air conditioner on to filter out the air,” said Todd.
Those who make less than $18,000 or those that live in a four-person household that makes less than 37,000 qualify for assistance.
"Come in. Don't sit there,” said White. “Come in here and get your help."
