INDIANAPOLIS -

The Allisonville Road bridge over Interstate 465 opened to traffic late Monday, Indiana Department of Transportation officials said.

The $19 million reconstruction project is nearly complete as contractors work to add extra lanes for vehicles, sidewalks and bike lanes.

"Finally," said motorist Daniel Owens. "It's better than not being open. I mean, it's not great, but it's a work in progress."

The new span is taller and wider for oversized loads traveling under it on I-465.

INDOT officials said the Allisonville overpass is one of the busiest interchanges in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

"If you remember, the high traffic would, especially in the morning and afternoon commutes, you'd see congestion," INDOT's Nathan Riggs said.

Once the construction is complete, motorists will have access to six driving lanes and four turning lanes.

Originally estimated to close for up to seven months, the Allisonville Road bridge over I-465 opened to traffic in less than four months.

"There will be some additional lane restrictions for about 25 days as Walsh Construction, our contractor, finishes up work, basically in the medians on the north and south sides of the bridge and also sidewalks on the sides," Riggs said.

Some Castleton businesses are pleased with the improvement.

"I'm really glad to see it fixed nicely and get better traffic flow for our office and for the neighborhood," said Ronald Sheppard, of Castleton Chiropractic Clinic.
