PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Transportation is receiving complaints about bent rims and blown tires as a result of road work on U.S. 40 near Reelsville.

Larry Deal, an Ohio resident and former WRTV photographer, said a body shop estimated his car suffered $900 in damage after hitting the unfinished patches of road on U.S. 40.

Deal said the area had several unmarked gaps in the road, causing other drivers to blow out tires and bend their rims.

Call 6 Investigates checked with INDOT, who said the area was filled in with stone and the crews paved the area Thursday.

“The Cloverdale Subdistrict has had a few calls and sent one tort claim form,” said Debbie Calder, INDOT spokesperson. “The concerns were mainly what were we doing and rough areas with the stone placed down.   The tort claim was for a driver saying it caused his tire to blow and bent his rim.”

Deal plans to file a tort claim with the state as well, seeking reimbursement for the repairs to his car.
