INDOT worker seriously injured in Vanderburgh County

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. - A 48-year-old employee from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is recovering in the hospital with a serious injury after being involved in an accident while working Tuesday in Vanderburgh County.

Indiana State Police (ISP) said INDOT crews were working on State Road 62 just west of Boehne Camp Road. Crews were dumping a load of rock in the driving lane in order for a track hoe to pick up small amounts to place in a ditch just next to the westbound lanes. INDOT had the driving lane closed to traffic.

ISP said at roughly 11:45 a.m., a rock measuring 1 foot in diameter rolled from the closed driving lane into the passing lane, and a grain truck traveling west hit the rock with its tire.

Investigators said the rock bounced back toward the driving lane, hitting INDOT worker Michael Chasteen, of Evansville, Ind. He was taken to Deaconess Hospital with a serious injury to the leg.
