INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis Army veteran and mother of two got the surprise of a lifetime this week when she learned she'd won a new car.

Melissa Nurse learned about the surprise at a golf outing Wednesday at Ironwood Golf Club in Fishers.

The group Cars 4 Heroes called her up, gave her the keys and a new car seat for the youngest of her two kids. Once a homeless, single mom, Nurse has relied on the bus line for years to get her to and from work.

"I didn't know until I got the keys, until Ed says, well, we have a car for you," Nurse said. "It was really unexpected. I'm still in shock, so I'm pretty excited."

Nurse is now taking courses for carpentry certification. She hopes to become an advocate for other veterans who are looking to better their lives.
