INDIANAPOLIS -- Yet another Indianapolis company has fallen victim to scammers accessing W-2 tax information via email phishing.
Equian, a healthcare billing company, headquartered at Castle Creek Parkway in Indianapolis, was hit with several data breaches including ones in February of this year and August of 2016.
Employees received a letter on May 2, 2017, notifying them that the scammers “may have received access to 2015 W-2 tax information for current and former Equian employees through a different phishing email scam.”
The tax forms included employees’ first and last names, addresses and Social Security numbers.
Equian has 1,400 employees and 350 clients across the country, according to the company’s website, which touts it is “one of the nation’s leading companies for healthcare reimbursement analysis and payment integrity.”
In the May 2 letter to employees, Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Gibson said they discovered the August 2016 breach on March 29, 2017.
The company has not yet provided a comment to Call 6 Investigates about the breach.
“After we had discovered the February attack, we advised the affected employees about the incident and the steps they can take to protect themselves from any harm that may result from the incident,” said Gibson in the letter.
“We are currently assessing the security measures we have in place to minimize the chances that a similar incident will occur in the future, and we will continue to implement security enhancements as needed.”
The company offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to employees.
