INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis landlord is offering affordable housing to homeless veterans to get them off the streets and help turn their lives around.

John Gremling has made it his mission to provide affordable apartments for homeless veterans.

"They are a demographic that needs a little help, said Gremling. "They need a hand up. I am honored to do it. I enjoy it."

Gremling manages 96 units across central Indiana. He rents about 40 percent of those units to homeless veterans.

"I appreciate those who have protected and served our country and they deserve a second chance," said Gremling.

Veterans like David Ebben, 33, who says he became depressed, alcoholic and suicidal after he was discharged from the United States Army in 2010. He was homeless until someone put him in contact with Gremling, and he was able to get an apartment and a step up in life.

Now, Ebben is 14 months sober and counts every day as a blessing.

"John's been the best landlord. He's provided a roof over my head, and he's provided that comfort that I'm not worried about where I'm going to sleep at night," said Ebben. "Once that has been provided for you, that gives you a sense you can look forward to the future."

Ebben is now working as a part-time Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Instructor and he hopes to become full time as he continues his recovery.
