INDIANAPOLIS – In an effort to decrease crime in the city, Mayor Hogsett and IMPD spent Wednesday afternoon walking Indy’s streets to get to know residents.
Officers and Hogsett have been going door-to-door each month in different city areas over the past few months. On Wednesday they got a chance to visit Flanner House library and play a few games of basketball with students at Watkins Park.
"I think it is important that the neighbors get to see the chief and the mayor, as well as retail merchants,” said Hogsett. “I think they appreciate the fact that IMPD is concerned about public safety in and around their neighborhoods and it's our effort to make our neighborhoods even safer than they are."
Police said violent crimes and homicides are down in the city so far this year. Indy has had 71 criminal homicides compared to 76 this time last year.
“I think it starts to recreate or send a message that we are all in this together,” said IMPD Chief Bryan Roach. “This is, public safety is a community issue. It's not just a police issue, or a fire issue for that matter. This helps solidifies those relationships so we can move forward."
