GREENFIELD, Ind. -- An injured Bald Eagle that was rescued from the side of the interstate in Greenfield has died.

A passerby called for help around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday after seeing the eagle sitting in the median of I-70.

Officers with the Greenfield Police Department called in wildlife rehabilitation expert Rick Hutson to capture the bird and take it to a special veterinarian for treatment.

Hutson said it appeared that the eagle had been hit by something that had broken one of its wings. The eagle was taken to a veterinarian that specializes in birds and wild animals but later died during treatment.

Bald Eagles are not rare in Hancock County where residents spend hours photographing the birds in a nesting area not far from where the eagle was found injured on Wednesday.

The Bald Eagles in the nesting ground near Greenfield are named Liberty and Justice. Wildlife experts say they have not been able to confirm whether or not the eagle that died Wednesday is from that pair.
